Welcome to the Marlborough History Website.

At this website, created to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Marlborough receiving its Charter, you will find information and resources relating to the history of the Town. Useful links to other websites are provided, as is tourist information, such as suggestions of places to visit in the Borough and nearby. Books on local history are reviewed, and you will also discover new articles on the town’s history.

Marlborough  in North Wiltshire, currently has a population of approximately 6,800 people. Situated on the Marlborough downs, the Town received its first Charter from King John in 1204. The Town was first occupied in Anglo-Saxon times and there is evidence of earlier Roman settlement. the famous Marlborough Mound is prehistoric in origin. The Town was an ancient Parliamentary Borough and until 1885, when it was disfranchised, returned up to two M.P.’s.

In 2004, Marlborough celebrates 800 years of history since King John’s Charter.
